Ballad of the Little Hater
September 5, 2008
Topher asked me to describe my Little Hater, and Derek asked me to discuss beatboxing. But the beatboxing game is to be sold, not to be told. If you're not familiar with the Little Hater go here.
UPDATE: By request, MP3 version here

Uh, oh - this video blog is diving into the self-referential, inside baseball abyss.
Video blogs about the difficulties of video blogging are boring.

lol. and i'm blown you didn't take home both of those black weblog awards. that's my little hater talking though. or not.

Posted by: Steven Klassen at September 5, 2008 1:02 PM
maaaan... my little hater has been whooping my ass like he was trained by the NYPD.
I spent a whole day locked in the lab and he derailed me into not making a beat.
Then I watched the GOP convention.
Shit was dire, son.
I'm going to redouble my efforts this weekend as long as Hanna doesn't cut out the electricity. Thanks for the pep talk.
Posted by: DJStylus at September 5, 2008 1:27 PM
Jay, I hope all this love isn't going to cause you any anxiety, because you're cooking. Keep teaching, keep the videos coming.

So,
I got turned on to your sight with the "beginner's guide to no homo" and I thought "ok so he's intelligent and funny, what else do you have to say?". that was the last thing you posted since the three day barrage and I love it. I am so glad that I found you, intelligent, not scared to voice your opinion and be silly yet in your face about it.
I too have my "little hater". Wish I could wake up to your Ballad everyday! It would light the fire for me to move forward with my business!
To make a long story short... Thank you for being you!
Posted by: Mellie at September 5, 2008 2:34 PM
its funny you should say that ur little hater has claws and shit...
whenever you talked bout your little hater I just imagined a miniature version of Jay Smooth standing on your shoulder talking shit...
sorta like thew whole angel and devil thing, lol
Posted by: Jsyrup at September 5, 2008 2:57 PM
Man, sick as always. Gotta say, I love when you do the political stuff, but sometimes it's nice just to hear the flow.
Keep it up, man.

You need to make that available as an MP3, because (a) it's HAWT, and (b) it would be a great thing to listen to when OUR little haters are getting us down.
Dude, you RAWK! Seriously. (And you also happen to be mad talented.)

I wanna hear what you do. And fukc that little hater. You just put a lyrical bullet in his head. Boo Yow!
Posted by: JW at September 7, 2008 2:42 PM
Thank you so much. This is one of those things most successful creatives don't talk about when they're on top, so we all think that people like Spielberg or Nas or whomever don't have lil' haters, too. I bet they do. My personal lil' hater is kicking my ass today and it's making me sad.
Posted by: moxyfilms at September 7, 2008 3:18 PM
Gorgeousness. Evokes Bobby McFerrin. (off to play Medicine Music and get some writing done ...)

Sweet! I'm definitely puttin this on my iPod.
Thank you.
You asked for stuff to vlog about, I have something that I'd like yer input on: why is it that the youth of today only seem interested in sitting around and doing nothing and getting paid large $$$ to do it? Has it always been this way and I'm just noticing it because I'm old? Or is there a new anti-work bias...like anybody who works hard is a sucker?

My little hater is a pessimist. You should hook up with the writer of the boondocks and do a strip on the little hater. Something with Huey's conscients. Little hater is a slapper. When is little hate 2 coming out.

I like your speaking voice...but I didn't think that would translate into a good singing voice. Wow, I stand corrected...your singing voice is amazing. The bluesy feel to the song is beautiful. Loved it!
Posted by: jaye at September 10, 2008 3:56 AM
@Lorenzo Jackson 09/09: Actually, Jay Smooth, if you ever collabed with anyone on the comic tip, I'd suggest this broher, Keith Knight, because his "The K-Chronicles" are more like your vlog work: autobiographical, grown-yet-geeky, funny & on-point with the political, cultural and the personal.
And McGruder gives him props!

Posted by: Kat at September 11, 2008 2:30 PM
Ah but ultimately I win because you're writing songs about me, D'Angelo McFerrin! Did Tay Zonday direct this video?
I say you better just focus on what you love or I will haunt you for the rest of your days!!! Muhahaha!!!!!!
