AUDIO BONUS: A Conversation With Prince Paul

September 19, 2007

While I work on tomorrow's video here's a cool little phone chat I had with the legendary Prince Paul, from when I was helping put together this book about hip-hop's endless romance with gaudy jewelry.

before dre's driveby drama skit's, prince p upheld the native tongue anti-gold ethos("black medallions, no gold") brilliantly. prince p and de la soul released "me, myself & i" as a 3-sided 12" single(1989) including a 3 minute skit titled "Brain Washed Follower". The track introduced the character Jeff, a young fan disillusioned by the popular status symbols of the day and disappointed in de la's refusal to conform. in the skit, de la also points fun at popular slang in the context of their use of 'plugspeak'.
