How To Rap In Three Languages

August 29, 2007

You should put your headphones on for this one. An international cypher with freestyle champions from London (Stig), Paris (Warlock), Berlin (Jago) and New York (Big Zoo and Vice Verses). A bit of behind the scenes footage from my radio show. This cypher actually went on for 20 minutes or so, if you guys enjoy maybe I'll post a longer clip.

Who do you think rocked the best, NY, Berlin, Paris or London?

UPDATE: Here's an extra bonus clip from the session:

Posted by: big charles at August 29, 2007 6:44 PM

Jay, drop the full 20 minutes on us. This shit is killer, can I get full album please?

Posted by: Austin Walker at August 29, 2007 6:55 PM

P.S. Recently over at http://therapup.rawkus.com/ there was a post asking the readers what their dream-team supergroup would be. I think I may have to go back and just post this.

Posted by: Austin Walker at August 29, 2007 6:56 PM

London totally killed it Jay. What can you tell me about Stig?

Posted by: Austin Walker at August 29, 2007 7:25 PM

Posted by: coqui at August 29, 2007 11:40 PM

good fucking God, just listened to the second clip. that german cat killed it, buried it, raised it from the dead, and killed it all over again.

Posted by: coqui at August 29, 2007 11:49 PM

Note to self: learn some more langauges

Jay .. YOU GOTTA Drop the full 20. I ain't heard a worthy cypher in ages, cause cats all about getting dough.

Posted by: Belve at August 30, 2007 12:56 AM

This makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Funny feeling...

Posted by: dot ess ee at August 30, 2007 4:20 AM

its a realy good initiative, im french and i ever seen the french rapper but i can tell to you it was improvisation

great freestyle for all its realy good and give a "sens" ( im french sorry for the ugly english spoken XD ) to peace love and unity

Posted by: Paris'iens at August 30, 2007 8:15 AM

That cypher was phenomenal. All the MC's were spitting that CRACK...but I'm partial to Warlock from France. His voice and flow are CRAAAAAAZY!

Posted by: ZOOmatic at August 30, 2007 12:09 PM

FIIIIIYYYYYAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

That was sweet J! I miss this dearly, there's not enough true freestylers getting exposed...that was hot. I love French and I wish I could understand what he was saying...I know French rapping takes it to a whole other level (with the word play n all) and it looked like freestyling was like a stroll in the park for Warlock. The German cat also sounded mad talented too. From those I understood - Stig's verses were the best.

PLEASE POST UP THE FULL 20 (and an mp3 download link if possible please).

Posted by: Gezzius Christ at August 30, 2007 1:27 PM

Posted by: CT Moore at September 1, 2007 1:36 PM

Wow. Big up EOW for putting this together. They have been holding down hip-hop for years in NY.

Posted by: Althea at September 1, 2007 3:41 PM

This is the best multilingual flow that I have ever heard. Le Flow, where commercial artists were brought together to do something similar, doesn't even come close to what these guys did. You have got to post the full 20 min and send the mp3 out. These guys came together like pb'n'j. Keep this up!

Posted by: eliehao at September 2, 2007 5:11 AM

Stevie killed it...good to see UK gettin the exposure. Everyone else merked it - a great showpiece for hip hop!

Posted by: Freud at September 2, 2007 7:19 AM

Posted by: MC SQUARE at March 12, 2008 11:46 PM

I must unfortunatly agree with the other french people here and call out the french rapper as the worst in the cypher. He didn't say anything and his rhymes didn't seem freestyled. No substance at all.

Posted by: dame13 at March 27, 2008 2:42 PM

oh my god...i got goosebumps mayne...this is HIP-HOP! for really deally...

the german cat wasnt that good trust me i speak all three languages represented..

Posted by: joe at April 10, 2008 6:53 AM

Posted by: Vlad at April 12, 2008 6:47 AM

I gotta say London.
Partly b/c I don't speak French or German.

But I love the UK the way they can play with rhyme due to the accent will catch a U.S. off guard every time.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 27, 2008 8:29 PM

It's actually four languages, Warlock is rapping in French and Arabic (N. Africa)

Posted by: Tony Benbrahim at May 22, 2008 2:12 AM

those dudes are alll wicked.
big up to jay

Posted by: nana at June 3, 2008 8:12 AM

hey where is big zoo on the internet . all i can find is this and Positive Balance, the collab with immortal technique

Posted by: Vigani at July 24, 2008 4:24 PM

Why I watch How To Rap In Three Languages (parts one and two) again and again:

1) The way Berlin rapper Jago saunters in with his knapsack and wire-rimmed glasses as if arriving at a university lecture.

2) Jago's boy-next-door smile which is incongruous with his "tiddy" and "excrement" lyrics.

3) The occasional yelps, whoops and cackles peppered throughout the raps.

4) The way NY rapper Big Zoo acts as taskmaster / den mother for the group.

5) Brit rapper Stig's brazen lyric, "Take a bite out of a Big Apple and dispose of the core," in a NY studio, which came off.

6) NY rapper Vice Verses hyperactive, restless energy contrasted against fellow NY rapper Big Zoo's avuncular style.

7) The camaraderie between rappers, which gives me goosebumps; it's infectious.

I could go on and on and on like hot-buttered popcorn.

Posted by: DMc at August 2, 2008 2:07 PM

Top quality. Stig was clever. Warlock came hard. I don't speak German, and the NY guys seemed more about hosting and having a good time with their guests.

I like to listen to a lot of international stuff (French, British, Cuban, Spanish, Canadian, Quebecois, Haitian, etc.) so this was a fun session to listen to.

Posted by: Luis at August 29, 2008 5:45 PM

That was friggn sweet!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at August 31, 2008 9:14 PM

well i also speak almost all three lang. and i think ZOO was rockin it

and the german guy jago only kicked old fashioned empty phrases ... no offense (hauste rein jago!)

Posted by: tIRIE at September 18, 2008 8:25 PM

Posted by: Matt at May 5, 2009 4:56 PM

That's crazy, dudes are going in! Dope to be able to dig a guy's style even when you don't understand what he's saying, I guess that's the power of music and Hip-Hop though. One.

Watching American Bandstand, then Soul Train on Saturday mornings and dancing like happy epileptics was a great way to start the weekend. It was always following a slumber party at the friend or cousin's house. Aretha Franklin singing "Rock Steady" is the first one I remember-I was ready five and would hula-hoop like Alvin on speed. Does anyone remember "the Bump"? The Afro-Sheen commercials were so fly. Even though Don Cornelius's funeral is totally private,I expect there'll be a memorial/tribute show for him. Singers ought to be those who is capable of doing with dignity. It would be best to have people who appeared on Soul Train during its peak years. Any ideas, hussies?
